Eight launches are kept
and
running every day, in two lines of four each: from Jubilee Street Pier (Hongkong) to Public Square Street (Yamati), the Loung Wing (Hillier Street) Wharf Hongkong to Hi Lung Li
Wharf Taumati. The fares charged are uniform, three cents third
class and five cents first class with an additional cent after
nightfall, when the Queen Victoria Street Wharf is used instead
of the Jubilee Street Wharf. A close watch is kept on competit-
ion, under Wong Lan Shang's management, and it was he who was
responsible for the reduction of the fares to one cent when a
new competitor started with one launch from further west
Eastern Street and so froze him out; and it is he who has
engineered the acquisition of rights over other piers on both
sides for the ring, with an eye to forestalling competition.
They do not themselves use these other wharves for ferry pur-
poses, (although a partner has admitted to me that the use of
one further North on the Kowloon side in theplace of the E1
Lung Street Wharf, and of one further West in Hongkong in addition
to the two now used would be a public convenience) although the
ring either already has or could easily acquire the necessary
rights. Wong Lan Shang holds that any departure from the existing
system would tend to lessen the total profits of the pool, and
there is nothing more to be said.
2.
At the present moment, the 16 shares in the ring
are held (as far as can be ascertained) by the following:-
4 shares (1.e. launches)
Tai Yan Co.
Lee Kee Co.

Sam To Co.
